Read the MYSA announcement ↗Last reviewed August 13, 2026Under the new cycle, each group starts with players born August 1 of one year and ends with players born July 31 of the next. For example, the 13U group covers August 1, 2013 through July 31, 2014.
The change can reduce the split between school classmates created by calendar-year grouping. It does not guarantee that every player in an age group shares a grade. Registration still follows birth date.
Clubs may evaluate a play-up based on technical level, decision speed, confidence, physical readiness, roster needs, and the quality of the daily environment. Ask what will best support development—not only which roster sounds most advanced.
Where the rule applies
MYSA’s announcement describes an August–July formation cycle for US Youth Soccer league and Cup competitions in Minnesota. A school team, independent tournament, camp, futsal league, or another governing body can organize players differently.
If the club’s answer differs from this tool, ask which sanctioning body and competition rule it is following. The registrar or club director should make the final roster determination.
